JOB TITLE:  SALES REPRESENTATIVE

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the District Sales Manager, the sales representative is responsible for the sale of all food, equipment and supplies, chemical and beverage products, for processing orders in a complete and timely manner and for the collection of customer accounts. Territory management for profitability is the focus of the overall efforts of this position's responsibilities. New accounts, penetration and the trimming of unprofitable accounts are how this management is accomplished.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Establish and/or maintain regular contact with existing accounts within assigned territory.
  • Perform cold calling/prospecting on a continuous basis to ensure new account development. 
  • On a continuous basis, investigate customer needs and provide customers with appropriate price and product information through the distribution of special sheets, price lists, flyers, samples and personal product knowledge. 
  • Assist sales specialists and manufacturing representatives in the identification of and introduction to potential accounts. 
  • Take customer orders and send completed orders in a timely fashion and according to established order entry procedures and delivery schedules. 
  • Alert order entry staff or Transportation Department of any special delivery requirements. 
  • Arrange for or make special deliveries to customers when necessary. 
  • Collect customer accounts according to established credit policy and send collections to Accounts Receivable in a timely fashion. 
  • Explain company credit policy, delivery schedules etc., to new and existing accounts. 
  • Investigate and resolve customer problems or complaints with products, delivery or service or relay complaint to appropriate department. 
  • Strive for improved gross margin dollars per order, higher gross profit percent and controlled number of delivery to the sales plan. 
  • Gather and supply credit information on new accounts and alert credit department to changes in customers' credit standing on existing accounts. 
  • Develop and maintain order guides on laptop, special sheets and other information as needed for use in sales and collection. 
  • Contact buyers, warehouse or inventory personnel for current information on stock levels, special orders or non-stocked or large quantity items, drop shipments, etc. 
  • Attend and participate in regular and district sales meetings to discuss current problems in sales and to develop a greater knowledge of products and sales techniques. 
  • Assist in trade shows/buying shows by introducing customers to new product lines and answering product and service information. 
  • Develop recommendations for improved handling of sales territories. 
  • Communicate leads for Specialists, i.e. equipment, beverage, chemical, healthcare, computer services, etc., to the appropriate department. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Equipment 

  • Broad based food knowledge. 
  • Good communication skills. 
  • Ability to consult customers. 
  • Ability to adapt to any situation that may arise. 
  • Must have valid drivers license and proof of insurance. 

Education and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business-related field or high school diploma plus relevant work experience. 
  • Some sales experience in foodservice or related field is preferred.
     

Physical Requirements

 

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs on occasion.
  • Must be able to spend 50% of the workday driving. 
  • Extended period of sitting in 8-hour shift. 
  • Ability to withstand long periods of time working at computer. 
  • Repeated repetition of hand and wrist in entering orders.
